Two-Part Short Film Premiering on YouTube and VEVO
The rapper and director’s semi-autobiographical film stars 25K, Ason, Sir Trill and Young Stunna, with each chapter arriving alongside a new single before a Johannesburg theatrical premiere on 9 November

Maglera Doe Boy, the South African rapper and filmmaker known as hip hop’s auteur, today announced Mzansi, an unflinching short film drawn from his own life. Maglera wrote the film and directed it alongside Brian O’Haze. It stars 25K, Ason, Sir Trill and Young Stunna, four of the most distinctive voices in South African music today.
At its heart, Mzansi is a commentary on African youth culture. It looks at a generation raised on hustle and hard choices, building identity, style and language in spaces the world rarely sees on screen. The film puts that reality in front of a global audience on its own terms, steeped in the vernac and sonics of Maglera’s Southern African roots.
The music lives inside the story. Each chapter is built around a new single, woven into the story itself. “Izinja 2.0” feat. 25K and Sir Trill and “Ntariana” feat. Young Stunna were produced by Zoocci Coke Dope and Big Les and recorded at Exodus Studios.
“Izinja 2.0” samples “Izinja Zam,” the classic kwaito record by the legendary TKZee, and pays homage to the pioneers who first gave township youth a voice. The record has been one of the most anticipated in South African hip hop since Maglera debuted a snippet at last year’s Back to the City festival.
Mzansi extends a visual body of work that has defined Maglera’s career. He shot and directed the video for “POVO” himself, served as Creative Director for Puma South Africa and has seen his music placed in Godfather of Harlem and Jordan Peele’s HIM. With Mzansi he steps fully into the director’s chair.
The Rollout
Mzansi arrives in two chapters on YouTube and Vevo, each paired with a single on all DSPs, before the full film premieres in Johannesburg.
• 2 November: Part I, Izinja. The first chapter premieres on YouTube and Vevo with “Izinja 2.0” feat. 25K and Sir Trill on all DSPs.
• 9 November: Part II, Ntariana. The second chapter premieres on YouTube and Vevo with “Ntariana” feat. Young Stunna on all DSPs.
• 9 November: Theatrical Premiere. The full film screens in Johannesburg, followed by an AfterParty panel with Maglera and the cast, live streamed on YouTube. The premiere is supported by Hennessy and Nando’s.
In Their Words
“Mzansi is my life and the life of a lot of young people I grew up with,” said Maglera Doe Boy. “Where I come from, you learn fast who you are and who you can trust. I wanted to show those streets the way they really look and sound, with our own people telling our own story. The music has always been the soundtrack to that world. This time you get to see it.”
“Maglera sees scenes,” said co director Brian O’Haze. “Every bar he writes already has a camera angle in it. Our job on Mzansi was to stay honest and stay close, to let the cast breathe and let the city speak. What came out is raw, and that’s exactly what it needed to be.”
