Each year, the Banff Mountain Film Festival receives hundreds of submissions to its film competition, from some of the world’s most compelling outdoor filmmakers. From these submissions, approximately 80 – 85 finalists are selected to screen over nine epic days in Banff. The Banff Mountain Film Festival – World Tour is designed to offer a concentrated snapshot of that experience – distilling the diversity, energy, and spirit of the Festival into a programme of a few hours for a global audience.
The six short documentaries that local audiences can watch are:
Cold Calls – Canada is a ski film pieced together through conversations, memories, and whatever the season decided to offer!
The Book of George travels from Brooklyn’s concrete jungle to the heart of the Everglades, with George McKenzie Jr., a photographer transforming his lens into a beacon of change. Swapping the weight of a gun for the promise of a camera, George found his calling amid nature’s raw grandeur, capturing everything from city pigeons and rats to elusive panthers, while empowering kids to shift their gaze to conservation.
In Dissidence, two unexpected names are emerging on the stage of the climbing World Championships: Ravianto and Raviandi Ramadhan, twin brothers from Indonesia. With nothing but their own resources, Dissidence retraces their extraordinary journey, from the training walls of Jakarta to a climbing route in Savoie, France, while navigating the challenges of the system. This documentary, embodied by a route they climb, celebrates their determination, the strength of their brotherly bond, and the power of those who dare to defy the status quo to make their voices heard on the world stage.
Jaunt follows the daily routine of Justice who is stuck in a stark warehouse office and is weighed down by mounting deadlines and an endless to-do list. But every day, he finds escape in a one-hour ritual that reignites his spirit.
Black Eyes, from Australia, is set in Mongolia’s timeless Altai Mountains. 13-year-old Kharakoz embodies a captivating blend of ancestral traditions and modern influences. As she learns the ancient art of eagle-hunting, the film delves into the powerful ripple effect of passing this sacred knowledge to girls. It showcases how Kharakoz and others like her aren’t just preserving but actively invigorating Kazakh culture in the face of rapid change.
In Flow Vision, the audience gets to see the something that has always excited Ambroise in downhill skateboarding: it’s those moments you experience two or three times in a season or even in your life. He has only experienced this a few times in his life while skating, so he decided to skate the most challenging road in Europe to immerse himself in this mental state – the flow state.
