South African professional mixed martial artist Terrence “The Mountain” Born has reached the pinnacle of African MMA, capturing the EFC Heavyweight Championship at EFC 138 and cementing his status as one of the continent’s most formidable heavyweight fighters at the World Sports Betting EFC Arena in Johannesburg earlier this month.
The championship victory marks the latest chapter in a remarkable rise through the ranks of the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC). Since making his EFC debut, Born has built an undefeated 5–0 record in the organisation, progressing from a rising contender to the division’s champion.
Known for his imposing physical presence, relentless pressure and devastating power, Born has earned his reputation as a heavyweight who is difficult to stop and even harder to break. His nickname, “The Mountain,” speaks to the mentality he brings into the cage: strength, resilience, discipline and an unwavering determination to keep moving forward.
For Born, however, championship gold represents far more than a sporting achievement. It is the culmination of years of sacrifice, intense training and an uncompromising belief in what is possible as he stated after the win, “Becoming EFC Heavyweight Champion is something I’ve worked towards through years of sacrifice, discipline and belief. The title is a huge achievement, but it’s also a reminder that the work doesn’t stop here.”
Born’s journey has also seen him emerge as a growing personality within South Africa’s combat-sports community. Beyond competition, he has featured in media interviews, podcasts and promotional opportunities, using his platform to help raise the profile of MMA and represent South Africa on an increasingly international stage.
With championship gold now around his waist and an undefeated EFC record behind him, Born has firmly established himself as one of the heavyweight names to watch on the African MMA scene.
And for Terrance “The Mountain” Born, this is only the beginning.
