The Feather Awards are back, and once again the country’s most fabulous celebration of LGBTQIA+ excellence, visibility, creativity and allyship is set to shine a spotlight on the people, personalities, organisations and initiatives making an impact across South Africa and beyond.
The landmark 18th edition dares South Africa LGBTQIA+ community to claim their voice at a time when funding cuts and a pivotal election year demand bold, substantive conversations about the country’s future.
The Feather Awards, South Africa’s foremost platform celebrating LGBTQIA+ excellence, courage and allyship, today announced its 18th edition under the provocative theme “The Signature Edition.” More than just a milestone on the calendar, the 2026 edition arrives as a symbolic coming of age, for the awards and for a generation of young South Africans who are being asked to step into the consequential decisions that will define the next chapter of the nation.
For eighteen years the Feather Awards have chronicled the boldest expressions of queer identity and advocacy. Now, at an age when adolescence gives way to adulthood, the organisation is deliberately shifting from celebration to activation. “The Signature Edition” is not merely a tagline – it is a summons. It insists that young people are not passive inheritors of the decisions made by others, but the essential, irreplaceable signature that authenticates the country’s future.
The call comes at a fragile moment. South Africa is absorbing the aftershocks of severe United States foreign aid cuts, which have torn through HIV programmes, youth employment initiatives and community based health services that the LGBTQIA+ sector relies upon. At the same time, the country is entering a critical local government election cycle in which youth participation remains stubbornly low. Against this backdrop, the Feather Awards is determined to convert anxiety into agency, using its platform to convene the courageous conversations too often avoided.
Founder of the Feather Awards, Thami “Thami Dish” Willis, framed the 2026 theme as a personal and national challenge: “We are 18. This is the age of signature – an age where the choices you make matter, and where your name becomes a binding pledge. South Africa is asking its youth to sign on the dotted line of history, and we refuse to let that moment pass by in silence. The funding landscape is punishing, and young people are being told there is no budget for their future. But we have never waited for permission. We have always built our own table. Feather Awards 18 is about showing up, speaking plainly, and adding your name to the future you want.”
The annual hoisting of the Pride flag at Constitution Hill, home to South Africa’s Constitutional Court and a World Heritage Site, will this year be led by 18-year-old Chanel Diale, representing the next generation of Queer activists, advocates and leaders.
The Pride flag will fly proudly at this significant national landmark throughout Pride Month, serving as a powerful visual reminder to locals and visitors alike of South Africa’s constitutional commitment to equality, dignity, inclusion and human rights.
True to the organisation’s history, Feather Awards 18 will blend irrepressible glamour with unflinching advocacy. The signature categories that have become cultural touchstones – Diva Extraordinaire, Hunk of the Year, Cutest Couple, Simon Nkoli Award – will return alongside new additions that recognise youth led movements, digital activism and grassroots organisers who are rewriting the social contract in real time.
Every nominee will be celebrated not only for their visibility but for their contribution to a safer, more equitable South Africa.
The 2026 edition will also expand the Feather Awards’ year round programming, deepening workshops, mentorship circles and safespace dialogues that directly intervene in communities hardest hit by the funding shortfall. In partnership with private sector allies who have stood firm despite economic headwinds, the organisation is determined to ensure that the awards ceremony is not a single night of glitter but the ignition point for a sustained national conversation.

Concluding the announcement, Thami Dish offered a direct message to young South Africans, “History will not wait for us to feel ready. The questions that are before the country right now – about equality, about resources, about dignity – will be answered one way or another. The only choice we have is whether our voices are written into that story or erased from it. Feather Awards 18 is that opportunity. Add your signature. Make it count.”
*Because a signature is more than a name. It is a promise. And at 18, the promise is yours to make.
