Award-winning broadcaster, creative strategist and media entrepreneur Kutloano Nhlapo has launched Zwaapp Konnect (Pty) Ltd, a connectivity company co-founded with the ambition of bringing quality Fibre-to-the-Home connectivity to underserved communities across South Africa, particularly township markets, through its partnership with Vodacom Fibre.
For Nhlapo, Zwaapp Konnect represents more than an entry into the telecommunications sector. It is the next chapter in a career built around connecting people to information, culture and opportunity.
For almost two decades, Nhlapo has worked across broadcasting, music, media and creative strategy. His career includes YFM and BBC London, where he built a reputation for using media to connect audiences with culture, ideas and information. He was also the presenter, co-producer and narrator of the BBC’s This Is Amapiano, which reached more than one million views. Now, he is turning his attention to the infrastructure that enables access to information in the first place.
“I have spent most of my career helping people discover information through broadcasting. Zwaapp Konnect is about addressing the next part of that problem: making sure people have reliable, quality connectivity to actually access that information.” — Kutloano Nhlapo, Co-Founder, Zwaapp Konnect.
FROM THE INFORMATION GAP TO THE CONNECTIVITY GAP:
Nhlapo believes South Africa’s digital divide is no longer simply about whether people have access to the internet. It is increasingly about where quality connectivity is available, how accessible it is, and whether underserved communities are adequately connected to the digital economy.
This is the opportunity Zwaapp Konnect was created to address.
The company’s bigger mission is to help reduce the connectivity and information disparityexperienced by underserved communities across South Africa and, ultimately, across Africa.
For a learner, connectivity can mean access to educational resources. For a job seeker, it can mean access to opportunities. For an entrepreneur, it can mean access to customers, markets and digital tools.
Connectivity is no longer simply about being online. It is about having access to what being online makes possible.
ZWAAPP KONNECT × VODACOM FIBRE:
Through its partnership with Vodacom Fibre, Zwaapp Konnect is bringing established fibre infrastructure and quality connectivity closer to communities where reliable home internet has historically been less accessible.
The partnership brings together Vodacom’s fibre capabilities and infrastructure with Zwaapp Konnect’s community-first approach to customer acquisition, engagement and support.
For Zwaapp Konnect, the opportunity extends beyond selling fibre packages. The company is developing a technology-enabled model using digital channels, WhatsApp, community networks and an emerging Ambassador Network to make discovering, understanding and accessing fibre simpler for township customers.
“The partnership with Vodacom is important because our ambition requires both technology and community understanding. Vodacom brings the infrastructure and capability, while Zwaapp Konnect is focused on getting that connectivity closer to the people and communities that need it.”
A DIFFERENT KIND OF CONNECTIVITY BUSINESS:
Zwaapp Konnect sits at the intersection of connectivity, technology, customer acquisition and community intelligence.
While the company provides fibre connectivity solutions, its longer-term ambition extends beyond being another ISP.
Zwaapp Konnect aims to develop into a data-driven digital customer acquisition and CRM platform for underserved markets, helping connectivity providers better understand, reach and serve customers in communities that have historically been underserved.
The company’s initial focus is township communities in Gauteng, with ambitions to expand its model across South Africa and eventually into other African markets.
FROM RADIO WAVES TO FIBRE NETWORKS:
For Nhlapo, the move into connectivity is a natural evolution of his career.
“Broadcasting taught me the power of information. Working in music taught me the power of culture and community. Now I’m building a business focused on the infrastructure that connects people to information and opportunity. In many ways, Zwaapp Konnect is an extension of everything I’ve done before, just at a different layer.”
The launch of Zwaapp Konnect marks a significant new chapter for Nhlapo: from connecting people through media to helping connect them to the digital world itself.
Its ambition is simple: CONNECTIVITY THAT CONNECTS PEOPLE TO MORE.
